The Top 10 Golf Courses in Portugal

Portugal is a golfers delight with brilliant weather, great service and generally cheaper than most other countries. The top 10 golf courses in Portugal feature courses which cover the country, but the two golfing hotspots are the Algarve and Lisbon. The Algarve remains the most popular golfing destination in Portugal with many of the top 10 golf courses featuring many of the top 10 golf courses. But we would also recommend Lisbon and a growing number of brilliant courses within 30 mins of the cultural capital.

The Montei Rei North Golf Course continues to be voted as one of the best golf courses in Portugal and is close to being in the top 10 golf courses in Europe.

This is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and since it opened in 2007  it’s become favorite to many tour player. Set against the backdrop of the Serra do Caldeirao mountains, measuring 7182 yards, Par 72, the course blends perfectly into the stunning surroundings.

With water in play on eleven holes, this is a brilliant and enjoyable course to experience.

Built in 2017, the West Cliffs Golf Course has shot up our list providing an absolutely outstanding round of golf on the Atlantic Coast some 60 minutes from Lisbon.

If you can keep you eyes on the golf course for long enough, this is a challenging championship golf course and being on the coast, the wind can play an important part.

Like all great courses, there are some unforgettable holes that you just can’t wait to return to and play again.

Opened in 2001, Oitavos Dunes is well recognised as being the best course within Lisbon. It actually sits close to Cascais, some 25 mins along the coast.

While not actually a “real” links, this course offers a full links experience so keeping the ball running down the fairways is a must to shorten the longer holes. And don’t be surprised if you bump and run onto the undulating greens.

We love this course. Beautifully situated, easily accessible from Lisbon and a great clubhouse and hotel to match.

With three 9-hole golf courses linked together, we were unsure if we should include this course in the top 10 initially. But once you have played the Algarve beauty, you know it deserves its place.

The best track is to combine the Lagos and the Praia into the 18 holes golf course and leave the Alvor for another round.

Situated near Lagos, with beautiful views over Lagos, this Robert Trent Jones Jr redesigned course combines brilliant golf and a brilliant Algarve setting.

Just like Royal Dornoch and even the Castle Stuart Courses, Estela is underrated simply because its is slightly off the beaten track being up towards the north of Porto rather than in the typical Algarve or even Lisbon hubs.

It is a wonderful links style golf course, built on sand and built near the River Alto near the town of Povoa de Varzim. Being on the coast, the wind plays its part in every round you play turning short Par 3’s into to long iron and drive attempts. It is often said to have some of the fastest greens in Portugal to test your putting as well.
