About the Club

Rye (Old)

When, in the early 1890s, a few local worthies decided they wanted a golf course in this part of East Sussex, they turned, for reasons known only to themselves, to a solicitor by the name of HS (Harry) Colt.

He laid out the first of many masterpieces and went on to a new career of international renown, while his maiden design continues to attract praise and plaudits to this day. Bernard Darwin, one of the greatest golf writers to have lived, was a long-standing member and club captain twice, at a 50-year interval.

Rye is very much a private members’ club, as you will see from its website but limited visitors are allowed. If you’re lucky enough to be among their number, you will see why the members want to keep this beautiful, classic links course to themselves as much as possible.
