The only current Open Championship venue south of Merseyside, St George’s is an uncompromising test that will examine every part of your game and, more likely than not, spit you out after 18 holes as being unworthy of the challenge.
Characterised by massive sandhills and dunes, with several blind shots and numerous bunkers, it is also the Open venue most likely to punish good shots – severe undulations in the fairways mean that a drive down the middle can end up in the rough.
It was founded in 1887 and its reputation grew so quickly that only seven years later it hosted the Open – luring the championship outside Scotland for the first time. It has subsequently seen competition for the claret jug a further 12 times and such is the quality of the challenge that only the best tend to prevail here.
