We had the chance to play Spey Valley twice in the last 6 months. The first time we got blown about, rained on and generally our golf matched the weather. So when we returned in May 2011, we were determined to have a better time of it and enjoy what we knew is a beautiful course right in the heart of the Cairngorm Mountains. Playing in mountains without wind is never really an option so the course has been designed with the wind in mind. The variety of holes is fantastic and with stunning mountain backdrops and buzzards flying in the sky and the occasional low flying jet,  it’s hard to keep your eyes on the course. But you need to. Scotland is famous for its links courses and the flat land by the sea but for inland courses, Scotland always runs a little short. There is obviously Gleneagles and Ladybank which stand out. What Spey Valley has managed to do is create one of the most beautiful courses in the most beautiful highland landscape. And it’s a treat for everyone that visits. The course was designed by Dave Thomas and it’s a fantastic golf course which feasts every sense. The course is long, from 220-yard par-3’s to 620-yard par-5’s but it’s not all about length. In fact, you could hit the ball long all day and score terribly. Designed to be a championship course the length is for those golfers up the ranks a little from us mortals, so choice your tee with modesty. But away from length, the course has managed to build great subtle changes into every hole which test almost every club in your bag. The bunkering for one is spot on…every time you want to give it a belt there is a bunker making sure you get it right. When you think you can attach the green, the bunkers protect the very angle you fancy. And if like me on the 10th, even the tree’s protect the perfect line into the green – well, the wind did not blow it back on target. Picking out any particular holes as extra special is surprisingly difficult which in this case is down to the sheer variety of choice Spey Valley offers. I birdied the 210-yard par-3 4th hole with a miss hit iron, so while I love that particular hole, I do not have a chance in hell of repeating the birdie. The Scottish Highlands are a beautiful place to play golf and any visit to the highlands should include Royal Dornoch, Brora, Castle Stuart and without a doubt Spey Valley.
