One of England’s premier links, Silloth is one of those gems that deserves much wider recognition but suffers, perhaps, because it is not nestled among or alongside a score of other top layouts. Also, it is sited on the north-eastern coast of Cumbria and is therefore a destination you need to make a point of travelling to – but the time it may take you to get there is more than worth the effort. All of the joys and perils of links golf are the be had at Silloth, springy turf to put an extra bounce in your step, fearsome bunkers, generous fairways but masses of heather and whin should you miss them, and small, subtle but very true and fast greens. Founded in 1892, it has subsequently hosted numerous prestigious amateur events. View Scorecard 41st Best Golf Course UK Situated on the north west coast of Cumbria, Silloth on Solway Golf Club is blessed with stunning views of the Galloway Hills to the north, and south to the Lakeland fells and the distant Isle of Man. The Championship links of over 6,600 yards has been laid out over the sand-hills west of town, touched by some of the great classical golf architects, but mostly moulded by Nature herself. The links is an R & A Regional Qualifying Courses for the Open. Hazards consist of heather and bent; whin and broom; heroic bunkers and sandy wastes. Fairways are always wider than they seem from the tee, and having been laid with springy Cumberland turf, invite courageous fairway woods and crisp iron shots. Greens are subtle, firm, fast, and deadly true. Challenges met, visitors can enjoy the busy and atmospheric clubhouse, a meal made with local produce; a wine or beer from the selection at Bar where there is usually also a guest beer, and above all, a warm Cumbrian welcome.
