Steve Stricker leads Hyundai Tournament of Champions
After three rounds of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, the season-opening event limited to players who won in 2011, Steve Stricker has a five-stroke lead over the field.
Unusually played from Saturday to Monday, the event, staged at the Plantation Course, Kapalua, Hawaii, usually sees impressive scoring and Stricker continued that trend by posting a third day 69 for a 19-under par aggregate after 54 holes.
His nearest challengers are a trio of players that include Scotland’s Martin Laird (67), Webb Simpson (69) and Jonathan Byrd (69).
Over the front nine, Stricker looked anything but comfortable with the five-stroke lead he held overnight and saw it whittled down to two by the time he reached the 12th. But he regrouped for a strong finish, making birdie at each of the last four holes.
