Branden Grace wins back-to-back titles
23rd January 2012
After taking the Johannesburg Open last week, Branden Grace held his nerve in a three-way play off against boyhood idols Els and Goosen to secure the Volvo Golf Championship title.
Ernie Els shot a final-round 67 at the The Links at Fancourt, George, South Africa, to finish 12 under par after Grace missed a short putt on the 18th to win the event in 72-holes.
At the first play-off hole, Grace two putted for a birdie after Els drove into the rough and Goosen pushed is second. As the only player on the green in two, he made no mistakes as he rolled his first putt to within three feet.
Branden Grace, who only qualified for the European Tour at last months European Tour Qualifying School, did not even have a place in the Volvo Golf Championship until he won last week's event.
Leading the Race to Dubai (only three events have been played), Grace has also jumped from 258th in the world rankings last week to a place in the top 100.
Fred Couples was the last ever player to follow his maiden victory with another win.
Els showed some fantastic form with a last round of six-under par as he tries to secure a top 50 ranking to qualify for The Masters.
Goosen eagled the 13th, birdied three of the last four holes and almost chipped in for another on the last.
It's been a great week and a dream come true winning an event like this in your home town
Jose Maria Olazabal, Ryder Cup Captain shared top spot after starting with two birdies but fell back to sixth.
Paul Lawrie and Harrington shot rounds of 74 and 76 respectively.
