The pioneer of West Cornwall Golf Club was rather strangely perhaps, as a cleric, the Rev. R.F. Tyacke. Where he had learned to play golf or become interested in it is not known. However, the Rev. Tyacke foresaw there was a certain pedigree in the natural land at Lelant and gathering together a number of enthusiasts he quickly had a nine hole golf course constructed.
These events took place in 1889 and it is worthy of mention that the Rev. Tyacke never lost interest in the game or in West Cornwall Golf Club and until 1901, the year of his death, he carried on the duties of Club Secretary.
Twenty years later, in 1921, the Club purchased the land on which the now well known, and for reasons attributed to ‘Long Jim’ Barnes, one might say famous course, now stands, It is clear the Rev. Tyacke and his friends built in sure foundations, it is thanks to them golfers of today are benefiting to such an extent.
And so to the 19th we go. With memorabilia dedicated to Long Jim Barnes and more recently Phillip Rowe you will enjoy your surrounds, encompassing all that is special about the history and traditions of the game of golf.
The Bar and Restaurant are looked after by husband and wife team, Andy and Cara Smith where a warm welcome is assured. Over the past nine years they have established a reputation that is the envy of the county and cater for anything from snacks to a-la carte.
The Club is pleased to welcome societies and groups and can arrange packages at an all-in rate to suit your budget. Contact the Secretary for more information.
