Another great links course that would surely host an Open if it were more accessible, the Championship links at Royal Dornoch, north of Inverness, is a truly magnificent venue.
The layout demands straight driving to avoid the numerous bunkers, but above all accurate approach play as many of the greens are elevated, so ball striking and yardages have to be spot on.
Despite the remoteness of its location, many of the world’s greatest players, including Tom Watson and Nick Faldo, have made pilgrimage to this north-east corner of Scotland and would regard their lives as incomplete without playing the Championship Course, which was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris and opened in 1877.
There is also a shorter, Struie, course, which is no pushover.
