About the Club

In the early 19th Century Robert Shepley, a young Glossop man, purchased a parcel of land in Marple. On part of it he built Rhode Farm Mill for spinning cotton and the rest he let out as a farm. The mill became known locally as Shepley's Mill and is now an industrial estate.

The Robert.S.Shepley we celebrated as the Club's first Captain and President was Robert Shepley's Grandson. He inherited the mill and farm including large areas of land in Marple, Hazel Grove and Torkington, along with considerable wealth.
The Industrial revolution led to the creation of a wealthy class of people like R.S.Shepley who found themselves with considerable leisure time for such pastimes as golf. The other requisite was land to lay down a course together with a site for a clubhouse, a suitable location was found adjacent to Woodfield Farmhouse which itself became the clubhouse.

On the 13th August 1892, a group of men including Robert.S.Shepley met and resolved That a golf club for Marple be formed.
Over the years many changes have been made to the original course too numerous to mention and the course is now well matured and offers a challenge to all golfers who enjoy an excellent Parkland course with pleasant undulations.
The present course measures 5554 yds and is situated approximately 5 miles to the East of Stockport, in Cheshire and is easily accessible from most locations.

Courses & Scorecards

Marple Golf Course

"A parkland course which is a good test of your iron play",

is how the Golf course guides usually describe Marple, however, those who know Marple GC well are aware that there is much more to the club. The club is well known for being a very friendly and sociable golf club, steeped in history and tradition. After playing this short but testing course and sampling the excellent social side to the club, we feel other golfers should be able to experience a little of what Marple Golf Club is all about.

We hope the contents of the following pages will encourage societies and individuals alike to come and sample what Marple Golf Club has to offer.
