Our Review

The Berkshire (Red)

For many observers the two courses at The Berkshire, both designed by Herbert Fowler, are of such quality that it is difficult to separate them in terms of challenge or enjoyment.

But hold a gun to their heads and most will eventually opt for the Red over the Blue, but it’s a close-run thing.

Occupying the same stretch of sand-based heathland that is home to Sunningdale, Wentworth et al, The Berkshire has all the features associated with those great layouts – tree-lined fairways, changes in elevation, plentiful heather and numerous bunkers. And unlike many courses, the bunkers are not there to look pretty in the brochure pictures but serve as well-sited hazards, blocking or obscuring your preferred route.

Herbert Fowler is probably the most under-rated course architect of all time – he was also responsible for Walton Heath and Cruden Bay, which alone should feature him in any list of the greats – and at The Berkshire you can clearly see the sympathy for the natural topography he always showed, allowing the course to fit into the landscape, rather than be imposed onto it.

35th Best UK Golf Course

The Berkshire Golf Club is one of England's more exclusive golf clubs and can be a bit pricey for a round. But, if you're prepared to pay for quality (and this is sheer quality in every sense of the word) then The Berkshire is the very place.

Some of the best amateur players in the history of golf have played The Berkshire as it is home to the annual Berkshire Trophy. Recent winners of the 72-hole stroke-play event are England team member Ross Fisher and Walker Cup star and former British Amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme. Previous winners are none other than Sir Michael Bonallack, Nick Faldo, Peter Oosterhuis and Peter McEvoy.

There are two courses on offer, the Red Course and the Blue Course.
