About the Club

Set in over 500 acres of rolling Devon countryside, the Ashbury Golf hotel is one of the most facilitated golf hotels in the South of England. In total there are 5 eighteen hole golf courses - Oakwood, Pines, Beeches, Willows and our new course Kigbeare. In addition there is an 8 bay undercover driving range, an 18 hole putting green, and a chipping and putting practice area.

The courses occupy a lightly wooded parkland setting, in rolling countryside on the foothills of Dartmoor National Park. Extra hazards have been added to the natural ones already present, with dozens of bunkers and eighteen lakes making play even more of a challenge. The courses are open throughout the year, with many of the holes having purpose-built alternative greens, allowing for changes when the weather dictates. All the courses are well marked with many helpful hints given during your round.

Forest and Ashbury Course

At 5,400 yards long and par 68 off the yellow tees this is very much a 'thinking' golfer's course, due to the nature of its construction. Ten picturesque ponds have been built and fifty-two well-placed bunkers have been added to provide the option of 'going for it' or playing safe. The first is a classic example of this, being a 231 yard par 4 with two well-positioned lakes either side of the fairway, waiting to catch any wayward tee shots. The many trees that have been planted are now maturing, producing golf holes with much character. The greens are large with many undulations, some of which are stepped.

Pines and Forest Course

Originally part of the Ashbury 27 combination course, Pines was extended and opened as its own 18-hole course in September 2003. At 5,628 yards and Par 69 from the yellow tee plates Pines is a truly testing course. The 10 new holes have been designed to keep the existing contours and natural features in place. For example parts of the Devon hedges have been taken out, moved and replanted so that they run parallel to holes. Ditches have not been covered in but widened to make them a significant hazard on three holes - where club selection is as important as distance. To enhance the natural features 1110 native trees have been added along with 5 new ponds - 3 on one hole!! 30 new bunkers have been built including on the 10th hole three links style pot bunkers behind and to the right of the green to catch shots running through.

Beeches Golf Course

The Beeches course, at 5,460 yards and par 69 from the yellow tees, is arguably the most picturesque of our courses. Starting from the clubhouse the course includes 15 of the original holes built in 1991. Fantastic views can be seen from many parts of the course. From the 2nd tee you can look South towards Dartmoor and with Dartmoor still in view you can look North to the coast and Exmoor.

The 10th hole is the most talked about hole of them all. A 375 yard par 4 that doglegs to the left and drops 180 feet from tee to green. Club selection is all important, with many people taking an iron from the tee to find one of the 3 plateaux. This leaves an approach shot of approximately 150 yards to the pin. Only the brave take a driver, but just about everyone walks off the green wanting to go back and play the hole again. The 18th is an excellent 152 yard par 3 finishing hole. The tee shot is all carry to the stepped green, with 3 ponds waiting to swallow up any shots short of the target.

Kigbeare Golf Course

At 6379 yards and par 72 off the white tees our new course will be the longest of the courses here at Ashbury. Set in the grounds of Kigbeare Manor adjacent to our existing courses the holes make excellent use of the rolling pasture, natural woodlands and plantations. We have also transplanted some 6000 trees to shape and define the holes.

The Kigbeare Course also boasts stunning views. To the south, the panorama of Dartmoor displays the rugged beauty of one of Englandýs finest National Parks, with Yes Tor dominating the horizon. To the east, the lush green beauty of Devonýs farmlands completes the milieu.

Construction started in November 2004 with the greens and tees being built first.

The third hole is a dramatic par 3 of 205 yards from the white tees. The hole drops approximately 50 feet to a large green surrounded by trees and protected by a brook running around the front of the green.

The sixteenth hole is another breathtaking hole. A 546 yard par five. After teeing off over a large pond, the fairway runs uphill to a tree in the middle of the fairway then drops down approximately 100 feet to a well guarded green.
