Another of those surrey heathland gems, West Hill also has the added spice of a meandering brook that comes into play on at least six holes and is usually exactly where you wouldn’t want it to be.
Each hole is defined and bordered by magnificent, mature pine trees and a glance at the scorecard, telling you the layout is a modest 6,350 yards, might make you think it will be a pushover but think again.
On every tee you will need to take a few moments to consider your strategy – because blasting your driver on every par four or five will not get the job done. It is a strategic layout that yields to the pickpocket’s subtle touch rather than the bludgeon of the mugger.
And if you do manage to hit the greens in regulation, there is still plenty of work to be done because the greens have many undulations and avoiding a three-putt is cause for celebration.
