About the Club

Our review - Wentworth (West)

The East and South (Edinburgh) courses have many enthusiastic supporters, and both are excellent layouts but the jewel in the Wentworth crown is the West. And this is despite the fact that the 18th hole has been ruined by putting a pond in front of the green.

The idea was to generate excitement when the Tour pros come to town by introducing a greater degree of risk and reward but all that has happened is everyone lays up and goes for birdie on this famous par five with a wedge.

The course owners have promised to restore the hole but we will have to see.

Apart from that, the West is probably as familiar to you as your home club, so often does it host televised events. The superb layout, winding its way among majestic trees, is another of the much lauded courses along the Surrey/Berkshire sandbelt that offers the perfect topography for heathland courses, and designer Harry Colt was too good to let it go to waste.

Apart from that 18th hole, our only other quibble is the green fee, which in summer 2011 was a ludicrous £360.

25th Best Golf Course in the UK

If you mention Wentworth, everyone thinks golf and golf at Wentworth is an experience. With 3 golf courses, the West, East and Edinburgh, the club offers an exceptional variety of golf for all levels.

The most famous course is the West which annually hosts the PMW PGA Championship. This event is one of the biggest events outside of the Masters and attracts the best golfing talent.

Set in woodland on a wonderful stretch of heathland, the West Course offers a Harry Colt classic with turning fairways and a great flow through the changes of elevation on the par-3’s, par-4’s and par-5’s.

Ernie Els recently added his touch for a renovation project including extensive re-bunkering and the lengthening of holes. The course has stayed pretty true to the orginial Harry Colt classic.

In 2010 a massive renovation of the greens took place. Ernie Els said, “I honestly think we’ve succeeded in making a great course even better. Hopefully, Harry Colt is up there somewhere and looking down on us with a nod of approval.”

However at £360 for a round during the summer, Harry Colt needs to be more than just nodding.

The East Course was also designed by Harry Colt, and the tight design calls for some accurate shot making. The bunkers are well protected and the par-3 holes range from 159 yard 12th to a very long 226-yard 7th.

The Edinburgh is the newest addition to Wentworth’s portfolio, designed by John Jacobs in consultation with Gary Player and Bernard Gallacher.
