A unique heathland golfing challenge Woking is a heathland course providing the golfer with a test characterised by beautiful but menacing heather carries, fast running fairways and greens full of “subtle” slopes. Complementing this, the player is frequently treated to grand views, as the rise and fall of an interesting topography unfolds, enhancing an architecture which, over the last century, has influenced the thinking of many course designers. As great golf vistas go that from the 11^th tee with its commanding view of the 5^th and 6^th holesoffers a glorious reward for the player who is able to pause for a moment before taking the driver from the bag. Playing the course well calls for accuracy more than long hitting, and nerveless chipping and putting. It was the great golf architect Tom Simpson who defined a good golf course as one that produced entertainment and a test of golf for every class of player. Arguably, more than almost any other course, Woking succeeds in meeting Simpson’s ideal. Visitors may be surprised by its pronounced “inland links” character, especially in the months May to October.

The same Tom Simpson, writing with HW Wethered in the “Architectural side of Golf”, considered that Woking was the course he would choose to play for the rest of his life if he were ever to be restricted to one choice.
