Studying the early history on Wildernesse Club, one is struck by the resilience of its early Members, especially in the mid-20s when the future looked bleak.

Formed in 1890 on land owned by its first patron, Lord Hillingdon, the Club flourished until 1923 when some land was sold for local residential development. Many Members, fearful for the Club's future, approached Lord Sackville for facilities to play in Knole Park. A number of early trophies were taken by the departing members, some of which are still competed for at the present Knole Park Golf Club.

Wildernesse was purchased in 1927 by George Fawcett in whose family the Club remained until 1952, when the members managed to buy the Course and in 1954, having built some new holes and Club House, Wildernesse Club Limited was formed.

Today's course is a wonderful monument to the strength and dedication of those early members. A fine, tight inland course, it is heavily wooded with fine tree-lined fairways; a course where both straight driving and attention to the well placed bunkers is essential. With few slopes and easy walking, it is still difficult to beat Par.
