Originally the course now known as Telford Golf Club was built at a cost of £150,000 in the mid 1970's as Telford New Towns first "pay and play" course and covers 150 acres, (607,000 square meters). It became a private club in 1980 when Country Club Hotels bought it. It has since seen many owners and is currently owned by Q Hotels. Back in 1976 the course was described as an American styled course with large white-sanded bunkers and greens that had such speed that they resembled putting on glass. The quality of the suspended water table greens, which were built with the same soil system as The Augusta National course (home of the US Masters), are still the envy of the majority of visitors. The actual golf club was established officially as Telford Golf Club on the 12th January 1977 with written permission from Telford Development Corporation. The initial fees to the club and complex were £100 joining fee + £100 PA. It was September 1981 before the current hotel and clubhouse was completed and opened. There are still six members who have been with the club since it was first formed over 30 years ago and they are Fred Snape, Ralph Williams, Ron Grice,P.Gajjar (Gajj) Gordon Sellars. and Jill Sheward.. |
