| In comparison with distinguished neighbours such as Wentworth, Sunningdale, Swinley Forest and The Berkshire located in the Berkshire – Surrey borders, you could understandably anticipate others falling someway short, yet there is certainly no disappointment as you turn into the long tree lined driveway of Ascot’s Mill Ride Estate. You are greeted by a landscape of perfectly manicured and cross cut fairways intermingled with lakes and the mounding and hollows which give this championship golf course a unique parkland design coupled with an inland links feel to the starting and closing holes. The new owners of Mill Ride (British Ensign Golf Limited - October 03) have clearly stated their intention to turn its undoubted potential into one of the countries leading golf clubs. Significant investment is already in evidence on both the course and in the clubhouse and a highly experienced new management team assembled by Wayne Sheffield and which notably includes renowned course consultant to the PGA European Tour, Jack McMillan MBE, overseeing the golf course development & conditioning. Off the back White tees the course plays over 6800 yards, but thankfully for the more discerning of us golfers there are also yellow tees to choose for an equally challenging, but shorter test of our games. Designed by international course architect Donald Steele, golfers must contend with seven picturesque lakes which all come into play (some twice) and numerous copses of woodland which all help to create a variety of playing conditions. The opening and closing holes have a links type feel about them with the 1st and 17th holes sharing a St.Andrews style double green, and a relaxing half way hut well positioned to recharge the batteries for the memorable 10th and 11th signature holes that await. Mill Ride really does have everything, with blind shots, doglegs, water, woodland and mounding, providing a truly interesting round of golf, with each hole evidencing precision cutting and exacting attention to detail. The lack of obvious road signage (until very near to the club) merely emphasises its select nature, with golfers enjoying their round in uncluttered exclusivity and an impressive membership list boasting the names of Sir Clive Woodward, Glenn Hoddle and Laurence Dallaglio to name a few. Mill Ride has hosted numerous Professional tournaments and is a regular haunt for many of the top European Tour Players. Gary Evans is attached as touring professional, Golf Management International now base their operations from Mill Ride and World No 1 Anika Sorenstam and leading European tour pro’s such as Brian Davis and Scott Drummond are regular visitors to Mill Ride. |
