The Mulligan+ Club Guide for Mapperley Golf Club
Mapperley Golf Club (Unmanaged)

The club was founded early in the 1900’s. Named ‘St. Andrews Institute Golf Club’, Very little is known of those days but in the issue of St. Andrews Parish Magazine dated 30 November 1903 the Golf Club is mentioned.

Reported in the Nottingham Daily Express on Monday 12 November 1906 ‘A match between St. Andrews Institute and Chilwell Manor was played over the latter’s Course with the following result, St. Andrews 6½ Chilwell Manor ½ ’. Reported on Monday 26 November 1906 ‘Match last Sat. at Stanton against Erewash Valley, St. Andrews lost 8 – 1’.

In 1909 St. Andrews paid its first Subs. Of £1.00 to the Notts. Union of Golf Clubs.

About 1924 the Club was taken over by the Y.M.C.A and became the ‘Morley House Y.M.C.A Golf Club’. Subs. Were 10s 6d (52½ p) per year with an entrance fee of £2.14s.6d (£2.72½ p). All progressed smoothly until 1931 when it was reported that because members wished to play golf on Sundays, the Golf Club should secede from the Y.M.C.A.

In 1932 Mapperley Golf Club Limited, was formed. The original 9-hole course was always described as a ‘tricky 9 holes’. Fences were required around the greens to keep off cattle, which then roamed the Course and the club logo was designed with that history in mind and retained to this day.

In 1983 the Golf Club and Gedling Borough Council built a new 18 hole Golf Course. Designed by John Mason a local golf pro and opened be Neil MacFarlane MP, then Minister for Sport.

Since that time there has been a continual investment programme involving improvements to both the Clubhouse and the Golf Course, which is now recognised as a good test of golf. Thanks to our predecessors for our present situation and thanks to our present Committee and staff for continuing the good work.

Before and after your round, please remember to visit our Clubhouse which offers a Restaurant and 2 Bars with a range of food available.
