The Mulligan+ Club Guide for Hesketh Golf Club
Hesketh Golf Club
Would you be interested in a golf break or holiday?

Set amidst the towering Victorian villas of Southports premier residential area Hesketh Park is The Hesketh Golf Club, the towns oldest golf club, founded in 1885. Standing alone on the crest of a tall sandhill, the clubhouse dominates the golf course, and the surrounding district. The course is at the northern end of southwest Lancashires sand dune system, which is the home of so many great golf courses. Professional championship golf has been played on these famous old links from the clubs earliest days, and the course is regularly used as a final qualifying course when The Open is played at Royal Birkdale. The course sets a unique challenge with half of the holes threaded through tall sand dunes; whilst the other holes border the Ribble estuary. Here the course`s neighbour is a nationally renowned bird reserve, where winter visitors are rewarded by seeing great flocks of migrant geese, swans and waders. Across the estuary the mountains of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire provide an unforgettable backdrop. The ambience in the clubhouse and on the course is that of a traditional town golf club. The English Golf Union has its roots in The Hesketh Golf Club. The initiative to form the Union came from a former Hesketh Captain, who became the Unions first president. The Clubs two most famous members were the Bentley brothers - Harry and Arnold who were possibly the most illustrious pair of brothers in the history of amateur golf. Significantly, as boys, they could have driven a golf ball from their garden or their school playground onto the Hesketh course. The drive up to the clubhouse is alongside a short hole that Henry Cotton described as the best short hole in Lancashire. What is beyond doubt is that emerging from Southports urban landscape and driving alongside this picturesque hole to approach the clubhouse, will fill a visitor with anticipation at the prospect of playing on these fine links. The Club is renowned for its friendly welcome of visitors.

A group of twelve of us (handicaps ranging from 26 down to 6) played Hesketh in March this year. Without exception, we all had a great day. The course was a fair test, in good condition and very picturesque. As a bonus, the weather was superb too. Two or three newly built greens were so new that unfortunately we didn't get to play them. They were, however, just another reason for wanting to return. Besides the golf, we were warmly welcomed by the club and it's members, enjoying a good lunch in a lovely clubhouse before heading home. We will be going back however. I can only apologise for not having posted this review earlier - it's been something I've been meaning to get round to for a while. I just hope this review has done the place justice.

Played Hesketh recently found the course to be in excellent condition for time of year. the greens were fast and true. My favouite hole being the par 5 7th with water all down the right hand side and extended out to an area just short and right of he green giving a real risk/reward feel to the approach shot. Very friendly clubhouse staff serving reasonably priced good quality food and drink. Will definately go back soon.

The Course is in great condition and the improvement work has made a huge difference. I note a Black Championship course has been developed which looks to be a great test of golf. Always a warm welcome and Southport is a great place to visit for groups and individuals. Hesketh is definately one not to be missed.
