How did such a course come into being?

In 1984, I retired (for the first time) and  moved to Scotland to be near the historic home of golf. I had been a lover of the game since the first time I swung a club at age 13. In the 70's, 80's and early 90's I played in countless pro-ams and tournaments all over the world, when I wasn't playing St Andrews and Carnoustie 36 holes a day - day after day!

I had a permanent caddie at Carnoustie. His name was Johnny. His wife said, I lengthened his life by pulling him around 36 holes a day, or more, whilst he was in his seventies.

One day in 1994 I woke up and decided I didn't like the trip to two of the greatest golf courses on earth. So for my 50th birthday I decided to give my self a golf course. Guthrie Castle Golf Course was designed and built in 1994/5, with the help of the superintendent of the "Old Course" amongst others. I wanted to use all natural hazards here, more than once, so I could build my own course in the historic home of golf.

No matter how well I played I wanted it to be the “ultimate  in golf.” I also didn’t want all the new equipment that enhances our game to play a major role! I wanted it to be a golf course, the likes of Bobby Jones the ultimate purest,” would enjoy immensely! Guthrie Castle Golf Course is that venue!

The course now occupies many of the fields I raised champion Aberdeen Angus cattle on. As a breeder I had a major problem, because my children and I never wanted to sell any of our animals. The all became pets. And as they grew to up to 2500 pounds, it became obvious I couldn't allow my kids to continue to play with them. As they grew old and passed away, fields became available to build the course.

As many who have written, our course, ‘The Lairds Course’, is as good as any in Scotland.

The media has been universally consistent: Guthrie Castle is target golf at its finest! The testimonials  say it all.  The course is built to US Open standards. Lush  fairways, testing par 4's, tough par 3's, well defined rough and receptive fast greens!

Guthrie castle golf is an experience you will never forget!
