As if stoutly making the statement that Northern Ireland has not been foung wanting in contributing to Irelands new golfing image, the grandiose Galgorm Castle has emerged as a shining symbol of all that is the very best in contemporary golf. Since the early 1990s, the Ulster counties have blossomed with countless new courses. But few have more character and presence than this wonderful creation on the outskirts of Ballymena by the lovely glens of Antrim. Its charm has its origins in a 400 years old estate on which stands one of Irelands historic castles built in 1618 by the eccentric Sir Faithful Fortescue. A generous budget has yielded the rich dividend of a top-drawer contemporary layout. The course is constructed to the highest specifications and blends harmoniously into a mature old world atmosphere bounded by the Rivers Maine and Braid. Five lakes also contribute to the picture postcard setting. There can hardly be a more inspiring location for a game of golf. With the backdrops of the castle and the ancient Irish fort of the MacQuillan clan, the variety of the holes is immense. The 3rd,7th,14th and 17th are good examples. Water is everywhere! At the 3rd it's right and left of the tee to start with. At the 7th anything short and right will end up in the water. The 14th is bounded by the river and at the 17th you need to hug a right hand line to stay clear of the stream. Adding to the attractiveness of a visit to Galgorm Castle is its proximity to such tourist attractions as the Giant's Causeway and the Glens of Antrim, making it an ideal base from which to explore some of the scenic delights of Northern Ireland. |
