Bingley St Ives Golf Club is situated within the St Ives Estate the historic home of the Ferrand family. The estate, which was bequeathed to the town of Bingley by the Ferrands for use as parkland for the community, was used in the Civil War by the Parliamentary forces of General Fairfax, whose entrenchment can still be traced across the moor below the 14th fairway. The club was formed in 1931 as a municipal club under the auspices of Bingley Urban District Council. Initially it was a nine-hole layout which was expanded to 18 holes in 1934. Today it forms a 18-hole championship test which ranks among the best in Yorkshire. Dr Alistair Mackenzie, one of the acknowledged greats of golf course design - the creator, with Bobby Jones, of Augusta National - was among those involved in the early lay-out. In 1990 the club was privatised, the members forming a limited company, agreeing a long-term lease with the City of Bradford Metropolitan Council and laying the groundwork for the building of the clubhouse. The new clubhouse was completed in 1994 and its design reflects the character of the estate buildings, borrowing from the pillars of the mansion and the arches of the surrounding buildings. Bingley St. Ives golf course is unusual in that it is a single loop, taking the golfers from parkland to woodlands to moorland and back again with stunning views along the Aire Valley to Leeds, Bradford and beyond in the south and east, the magnificent Bronte moorlands to the west and the imposing Rombolds Moor - ' the Ilkla' Moor of Yorkshire's anthem - to the north. In the 1980s the course was the venue for the Lawrence Batley International, a major event on the PGA Tour and was played by many of the star European professionals plus 'greats' of the stature of Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino. In the tournaments three years at Bingley the winners were Sandy Lyle (twice) and Nick Faldo. Several leading players, including Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Jose-Maria Canizares have made contributions to the improvement of various holes, the course is constantly being upgraded and refined so that it continues to offer a test for the best golfers as well as a fair but demanding challenge for the club players. Currently the club has approximately 350 Gentlemen playing members, 90 Ladies and 30 Juniors and prides itself on the welcome afforded to visitors, whether in organised groups or as individuals. Bingley St. Ives offers a memorable day's golf in marvelous surroundings with an impressive clubhouse to complement the excellence of the course. Come and investigate the delights of this special corner of West Yorkshire. You will surely come again. |
